Walk into 2016

It is that time of year again to reflect on the past 365 days. Whether or not you were able to achieve your 2015 goals, this year offers a fresh start and a possibility for change.

Ringing in the New Year brings thousands together in promising healthy eating and weight loss. I know I join the long list of people who make short-lived goals. While I have managed to hit the gym and cut back on sweets for the good part of many January’s, I soon resort back to my pre-resolution routine. For me, after a full day of work, a trek to the athletic centre is at the bottom of my priorities. I know my hea lth is important so this year I want a realistic and achievable healthy living goal that will leave me feeling and looking great.

Living in a metropolitan city I fall prey to relying on the multitude of ways to get around – car, bus, train, subway, taxi, and the now popular Uber – and disregard the healthier alternative – walking! Of course it may not be feasible to walk hours to your destination, but why not skip the 5 minute street car rides and grab the morning coffee via my own two feet? There are an endless number of possibilities to get your walk on this year -- get off a stop early on your bus or subway trip, enjoy stroll with friends, park on the fair side of the parking lot, or face the stairs instead of an elevator.

Walking is the simplest form of exercise. It is free, requires no equipment, no special training and can be done almost anywhere at any time. It can easily fit into everyone’s lifestyle and has many noticeable and proven health benefits. That is why this year my New Year’s resolution is to walk more – 30 minutes every day. I urge you to walk more this year and join me on my stroll to a healthier, happier life.

Harvard Medical School found that walking just 21 minutes a day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 30% and cut the risk of an early death by 32%. Of course there are many other health benefits to walking such as reduced risk of certain cancers, coronary diseases and strokes, improved joint and bone health, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels

Smile More :) – A regular walk can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve your overall mood! When you walk, or partake in any exercise, endorphins are released, which creates happy feelings. Studies suggest that exercise can alleviate symptoms among the clinically depressed. The British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that walking worked faster than antidepressants!

Bye Belly! Walk off Weight – Walking causes your metabolism to pump which will allow you to start shedding the pounds. Depending on your weight, and speed, a 30 minute brisk walk can burn about 90-360 calories!

Sleep Sound – Feeling exhausted? Walking can help you sleep better and feel more alert during the day. According to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, women who walk regularly were more likely to relieve insomnia than those who did not walk.
